GENERAL

NAME: Susana Rosa Velasquez
NICKNAMES: Ana, Suse (Hazel only), Susie (if you're brave)
AGE/DOB: 16 | December 8
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood (but her family likes to fancy themselves basically pure)
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female; She/her
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual
HOMETOWN: Los Angeles, CA. Was born in Colombia, but the family moved when she was 8.

CONCEPT: Perpetually overlooked daughter of privilege uses Quidditch to find where she belongs. Quidditch obsessed firecracker finds herself, and her confidence, on and off the pitch.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: Upon first glance, Susana seems rather one-dimensional. She's small, with dark skin and exotic dark features. Her hair is long and thick, her makeup on point, her lips full and pouty. Really, she looks like she could be right at home on a run way governed by her mother (and it's Rosa's perpetual dismay that her daughter isn't, tbh) She has almost-constant resting bitch face, and even when she's smiling there's a hint there, though her genuine smile is one of the warmest things to behold. The only issue she has with her face is the need to wear glasses, and Ana avoids them by using contacts whenever possible. She also went through a phase where she thought she had to be blonde to look more like all the models her mother directs and the girls boys rave about, but she's since decided she doesn't really care if she looks how other people want. She's happy in her own skin.

Much to her dismay, Ana did not go through a growth spurt over the summer, so she's no taller than the meager 5' she was last year. Her curves have filled out a bit, surprisingly, though that could also be because she's started dressing more....seductive in certain situations so now they're easier to see. Her mother has told her on more than one occasion that one of her greatest assets is her slim and developed figure, but seemed surprised despite herself to note Ana's change over the summer. Ana still doesn't dress like a Quidditch obsessed tomboy, which is what always throws people off. She likes dresses and skirts, especially in flowy fabrics, and doesn't mind doing her hair and makeup despite knowing it will get messy at practice. She can't help but keep up with trends, and always has designer brands...even in practice or loungewear (which her mother abhors, naturally)

HEIGHT: 5'.

PB: Cierra Ramirez

PERSONALITY

LIKES: QUIDDITCH, cherry flavored ANYTHING, the color red, high heels, being on a broom, being away from her family, beach weather, animals (she was never allowed pets at home), adventures, coffee, REAL Mexican food, sweets, being praised, shopping, kissing, going to dances

DISLIKES: Ghosts, Her mother, cold without snow, being trapped inside, reading, messing up, talking about her feelings, being ignored, the smell of bug spray, pumpkin flavored anything, when people wear socks that don't match, short jokes, her hair, being alone, marshmallows, fighting ghosts, zombies (because they look like the ghost that tried to pull Sam and all of them down into the lake), the woods

PERSONALITY:

When people first met Ana, they were conflicted right off the bat. She looked adorable and sweet upon first glance, but then they noticed the look in her eyes. It was never as hostile as it could be, admittedly, but there was definitely a lot of resting bitch face going on (still is, if we're being honest). The word to remember there, though, is resting. Even if she still has the set to her face at times, it's much easier to see now that she's not really a bitch, or at least not as much as one as she once pretended to be. It was the cliche defense mechanism, but often Ana was antagonistic or contrary just because. Really. She had no motive, at least outside of being a product of her upbringing, and it took a fair bit of time and a lot of good people to make her see that she didn't need to push people away before they could even try to get close. That they wouldn't ignore her or overlook her or bring her down, instead they would bring her the validation and acceptance she'd so been craving all her life.

With her friends and their acceptance came a confidence she never developed at home. She began to grow into herself as a person, figuring out who she was and what she wanted and being comfortable enough to express those things without someone laughing at her or dimishing the things. Ana has always been quite bossy, overly (read: aggressively) assertive, and rather linear in her thinking. Being bold has always been another way to exert control in her life, and she extended this into her words. Ana often says the first thing on her mind, no thought or filter at all. She no longer does so without consideration for feelings, however. She's learned how to hold back when needed, how to be gentle with those who respond better to it (though this is still a work in progress), and has learned being honest is not always best. She's not a liar, but she won't hurt your feelings over something small just to make her own voice heard.

While loud and tempestuous and over-confident in her abilities, it's important to note that Ana is actually incredibly insecure. Despite being the youngest of three siblings, there's such a gap between her and her siblings that she's always felt like the unwanted extra. Being left out so much and ignored while her siblings reap glory after glory has left her with an almost crippling sense of inadequacy. Ana has middle child syndrome pretty badly as a result, and it's because of the people she's let in that this has begun to ebb away finally. Instead of acting out to get any sort of attention, whether it be good or bad, now she is simply a little bundle of spitfire and sass. She still likes attention, but knows the difference between the good kind and bad kind now. Ana isn't afraid to speak up or give her friends grief, as teasing is a fun way to let them know she cares, but the insecurities aren't completely gone. She still gets easily jealous or overly envious when people get things instead of her or that she might want. She can still be overly territorial and protective of what's "hers" (including people), and has a lot of new and complicated feelings when it comes to interacting with the opposite sex. Ana has had a taste of how fun kissing is, how fun going to dances are, how fun it is to be liked by someone else, but is definitely uncharacteristically shy when it comes to going after those things. Well, not the kissing, but the dating parts. It's more of that insecurity, thinking she doesn't have anything more special than the countless gorgeous girls at their school. Still, she's not the type to be afraid or hold herself back, so it probably would shock anyone (except Hazel) to know this with the way she effortlessly engages with people.

In spite of how much of herself has changed over the last year, one thing has remained unfailingly constant: Quidditch. Ana found a love and passion in the sport early on in her life; so much so that it's become a huge part of her. Quidditch was always there, even if her family scoffed and deemed it "too barbaric" for their status. It is her one constant, the one thing she could count on, and when she was old enough to join teams they were more like family than her actual family. She got recognition there, even praise, and on a broom was the first place Ana really belonged. She began learning how to choose her own allies, her own support, then. Independence had always been a part of her life, of course, but nothing made her truly feel like she was in control like Quidditch. She loves the game with a fierceness, and can often be way too obsessive about it, but she doesn't care. It's her love, and she will work hard to get all the dreams she wants out of it. Even if people (like her parents), disapprove. Which is where her desperate desire to prove herself and prove everyone wrong comes in. She charges in with this determination and focuses a lot of energy on being the best and proving she's got what it takes. Her goals are something she takes seriously, and she will put her heart and soul into what she believes in. Sure, it's Quidditch mostly, but it also applies to any issue that she feels strongly about.

As wild and impulsive or sarcastic as she is, no matter how much she's growing and learning to love herself, under it all is still a girl who is scared of being alone and forgotten. Ana is used to putting up walls, making it hard to get through, but that's only to see who cares enough to get through. She's a fun girl, and can be engaging and relaxed and even youthful if you work past everything else. She can't stand disappointment, though, and isn't great with emotion. Her usual tactic is to pretend they're not there, but she is a teenager and this usually leads to her lashing out when they get overwhelming. Ana is a good kid, she just needs a little extra effort to find that softness and good.

SKILLS

LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English and Spanish (native). Italian (fluent, thanks to her mother's job).

PATRONUS: Scorpion (Not successful). As depressed as she'll be that her patronus is something so terrifying and gross, it's actually pretty appropriate. Scorpions are associated with strength, destruction, and self-protection. These people tend to have an aggressive shell, and are often aloof and/or intimidating. The defenses, however, protect a soft emotional core. They can wield a lot of power, but it's often reserved in its use. They will not hesitate to retaliate if crossed.

SKILLS: -Quidditch: Ana is a passionate and intense player. She loves the game, and plays with 110% always. She not only practices hard, she has also studied everything she can about it so as to improve more.
-Cooking: This only applies to actual meals, Ana can't bake to save her life. She specializes in traditional Mexican food, but is adept enough to improvise and make her own dishes without necessarily needing recipes.
-Drama: Ana is a really good actress, and loves being on stage. She is a natural, with the uncanny ability to perform emotional scenes with impressive intensity given how she struggles with emotions on a daily basis. Ana loves the stage, can play a variety of roles, and is extremely comfortable there.
-Singing: Much like acting, Ana is a natural when it comes to singing. Better, actually, since her mother made her take voice lessons once she discovered she had a natural talent. (It's a "ladylike" art)

HISTORY

FAMILY MEMBERS:

MOTHER: Rosa Velasquez (nee Loza)| Halfblood, Famous Designer
FATHER: Rafael Velasquez | Halfblood, Executive CEO of a Software Company
BROTHER: Cristian Velasquez | 26, Ribbonfin Alum, Healer (Owns a clinic)
SISTER: Mariana Velasquez| 28, Ebonhide Alum, Works at Law Firm

HISTORY:

Rosa and Rafael did not have the fairytale romance you read about in books. Being from influential (aka old money) families, both prominent in their respective magical communities, it was always assumed a proper match would be negotiated for each of them when the time came. Their families were rather traditional, bordering on purist in unfriendly terms, yet neither seemed very bothered by the idea. Wealth and prestige were their natural ways of life, so they put up no fight when their parents told them about the agreement. Luckily, they liked each other well enough when they got married, and even came to love each other along the course of their lives; reservedly, of course. They had their first of two children fairly quickly, with Mariana coming not more than a year after their marriage and Cristian following two years after that. It was the expected duty to produce children, especially male heirs, and their planning was perfectly spaced. Both children were well-behaved joys, and everyone in the family settled onto the fast track to success routine with complete comfort at knowing what was coming and how things would play out.

Until Susana arrived.

It was nine years after her brother was born, following a cruise the couple went on for their wedding anniversary where too much tequila had been distinctly at fault. Rosa discovered she was pregnant a couple months later, and despite initial panic at their perfect setup being disrupted, they had no choice but to go along with the surprise. Which really set the tone for Ana's childhood quite emphatically. They had no choice. With two children already stealing the hearts of their friends using intelligence and natural giftedness, Susana as a wailing infant wasn't nearly so endearing. It didn't help that her parents were mentally out of the "baby stage" by that point, meaning Ana was primarily cared for by nannies and the like. When she started showing her own personality, she was constantly dismissed or simply ignored altogether. They weren't cruel or abusive, not really, but it didn't take Ana long to realize she wasn't being treated fairly. She quickly became fed up with being overlooked, so she made them look when they tried not to.

Acting out became such a fixture in her behavior that it started to overshadow everything else. Her natural aptitude for learning, her engaging and dominant personality, her natural inclination for all things involving physical activity, everything. Ana became snappish and sarcastic, not caring if she was being scolded or even punished so long as they were actually acknowledging her, and her family was obviously not a fan of this tactic. Being so much younger than her siblings meant Ana was looked at as a pest rather than a playmate or friend, and she grew adept at amusing herself seeing as how her siblings couldn't be bothered to interact with what they deemed "a little brat". These attempts to find things to occupy her time and entertain herself are what pulled her towards Quidditch. A few kids were playing at school when she was eight, and Ana asked to join out of pure curiosity and boredom. From that first acceptance on, she was hooked. Nobody ignored her in Quidditch, nobody dismissed her. On the contrary, Ana was actually praised. For the first time, her talents mattered, and her natural athleticism quickly gained her favor with her peers. She asked her parents for more equipment that very night, along with begging to play on actual teams in leagues, which they agreed to simply to keep her out of their hair. Ana suspects they also thought it was just a phase because they started lecturing her more and more the older she got. People in their position just didn't do that sort of thing, after all. They'd point out her siblings making legitimate choices in their paths, but ultimately she was allowed to continue just so they wouldn't have to argue anymore. They also likely didn't want to deal with the consequences and fallout if they said no, of course. (People still talk about the Yule Ball incident of 2009, and not in a good way)

Ana flourished in Quidditch, but luckily was smart enough not to draw her parents attention or ire by doing poorly in school because she was playing all the time. She grew more as a whole playing with her friends (and experimenting with kisses) than she ever had at home, though her defensive and bossy (as a means of overcompensation) nature couldn't be helped by then. She had dreams of making it professionally, to prove her parents wrong, and practiced nearly every hour she wasn't in school. Ana could have gotten herself into Gooseberry on that talent alone when the time came, but her parents couldn't resist a chance to flex their influence and flaunt their prestige. It didn't much matter how she got there, though. Soon enough, Ana was right where she (and they) knew she belonged. Though they intended for her to use the school as a means of straightening out and making alliances and securing proper goals, Ana instead used it to further her own dreams. Not to mention using it for what it was: freedom. She threw herself into Quidditch immediately, but there were so many talented upperclassman that she didn't make first string. Reserves was impressive for a Freshman, however, though Ana didn't play at all her Freshman year.

Having a designer for a mother meant that Ana was never too tomboyish, but she had always loved being outside; not to mention her Quidditch obsession kept her from enjoying sitting around indoors as much as her family did. She loved everything about Gooseberry right from the start, settling in among her Coppertale housemates without difficulty. She got in the swing of classes while working on her skills with such a talented team, and was quite content with herself and her life for once. She was granted the slot of Keeper on the first string line at the beginning of her Sophmore year, which sent her over the moon with excitement. Ana did her best to prove to Sy (who she borderline hero worshipped) that he had not made a mistake, and for the most part her first year on the first string team went well. She even made the school team, which seemed to cement all the time and effort she put into Quidditch. It wasn't just a hobby, it wasn't just something she loved but wasn't good at. Of course, there was definitely room for improvement, and every game where she didn't do as well, those old insecurities came rushing back to the surface. A fact she vowed to change with even MORE work next season.

Outside of the Quidditch highs, Sophomore year was truly a turning point for Ana. She made some serious friends, started going to Grotto parties, had her first kiss (followed by an insatiable desire for many more), and had her first dates for dances. She was truly opening up as both a girl and a person, and she found herself experiencing all sorts of new things she never would have before if she'd stayed in her prickly bubble. Ana got involved with her fellow sophomores in a variety of ways she never had in years past. This was due primarily to the spooky happenings in the forest surrounding Gooseberry. The sophs decided it was their mission to figure it all out, even orchestrating illicit seances and ghost hunting adventures. It was fun and definitely bonded them together, at least at first. As the year progressed, however, things got more and more serious; more terrifying. By the end of the year, Anon had kidnapped half the school and hidden them away in the woods for the other half to find. Ana was among the rescuers, and the experience definitely left its mark on her permanently. The puzzles were intense, the trekking through the weird not-quite-Gooseberry forest was beyond terrifying. Add in the fact that she, Zach, Hazel, and Sam encountered some horrifying ghosts and it's no wonder she sometimes can't sleep through the night. She remembers the feeling of that ghost scalp ripping off in her fingers, remembers that bloated face in the dark water. She knows just how close it came to taking Sam with it forever, taking them all with it probably, and it's definitely made her a little more wary. More cautious. Although it also showed her that she's not helpless, she's capable of fighting and helping her friends, and that her friends are truly the most important things to her in the whole world.

Going home for the summer was beyond a let down after all that. Like with any summer, she invited every friend she'd made to come visit, and dreaded the conversation with her parents about why she should be allowed back to Gooseberry. There was no way Ana couldn't go back. It was her home. It was one of the few things she truly loved. Unfortunately, that conversation never came to fruition. Ana should have been happy they didn't put up a fuss about her returning, but instead the lack of caring about what had gone on and why she should probably not go back stung. Ana brushed it off, like she did everything else with her parents, and instead threw herself into summer Quidditch practice. It's her junior year, and Sy's last year. She's going to make sure she's perfect. And hopefully no ghosts show up to get in the way this time.

SCHOOL

YEAR: Junior
HOUSE: Coppertale
SORTING:There really was no other place for Ana. Bossy, competitive, outspoken, confident? Quadruple check. However, there were great points made from all other houses (even Ribbonfin, surprisingly) "Oh, how tenacious and focused you are! Come to Ebonhide and let yourself shine" "You have a forgiving soul, you belong in Ribbonfin" "You're so expressive and dedicated to what makes YOU happy! Come to Azurcrest!" It really was difficult, but Ana felt a pull to Coppertale right from the start and ultimately went with her gut. She hasn't regretted it since.
WAND: 11", Dragon Heartstring, Fir, Sturdy
FAMILIAR: An ragdoll kitten named Titania

CLASSES: Charms, Herbology, History of Magic, Outdoor Exploration, Potions, Astronomy, Aesthetic Magic (Her parents think she could go the doctor route like her brother or be an artist to save her from Quidditch. She wrestled Outdoor and Astronomy in there)
ADVANCED STUDY: None!
SENIOR PROJECT: She's going to do a study in how different woods could be used to make different brooms, much like with wands, to improve performance. She's still working out the details on how she's going to obtain the woods to test her theories, but since her parents have money she is thinking she can get them imported. She's also going to write a detailed thesis on the experiment and her ideas on how it all should work.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Ana is a good student, though it's not always easy for her; at least not in some subjects. She gets As and Bs, with a couple Cs in her worst subjects (which are Potions and History of Magic) She loves Charms and also Astronomy. She actually has a surprising knack for Aesthetic Magic too and enjoys the class despite it being her mother's suggestion.

EXTRACURRICULARS:Quidditch (Keeper), Duelling/Fencing, Drama, Choir
